Using a new version Address CDROM
| RAC - You may
need a new version of the RAC .dll. Contact the manufacturer for info on any updates
they may have. If one exists, it should be copied into your DXbase
directory
and overwrite the file with the same name. |
| QRZ - You may
need a new version of the QRZ .dll. You can download this from QRZ and place it in
your DXbase for Windows directory overwriting the file with the same name. ftp://ftp.qrz.com/tmp/qrz32.dll |
| At the time the current release of DXbase was completed and
made available for sale, it was tested to insure compatibility with the current version of
CDROMs that it supports. After DXbase is released, manufacturers of Address CDROMs
may offer upgrades to their products. As long as they maintain backward
compatibility with their product versions, upgrades of their products should continue to
work. Most manufacturers do comply with this standard approach to programming.
However, if you encounter a situation where the new Address CDROM no longer works,
follow the procedures below in trouble shooting. |
Procedure |
- Insure that the new CDROM is properly installed
- Review the manufacturer's documentation to insure that you have complied with any
special setup that may be required.
- DXbase ships and installs the .DLL files that were current at the time DXbase was
released. The new Address CDROM may require that you use a later version of their
.DLL. Insure that you copy the new .DLL into the DXbase directory. The name of
the new .DLL should match the existing .DLL that was installed by DXbase. If the new
.DLL uses a different name, you may need to rename it to the older name in order for
DXbase to be able to access the file. ( The .DLL name is embedded into the DXbase
software and it expects to find a .DLL with this name).
- Insure that your DXbase user options are set correctly.
- You may wish to post a message on the DXbase Reflector to see if anyone else is having
the same problem. This would enable you to know if the problem is with the new
CDROM, or is it simply a problem on your system.
- If you were successfully using a previous version CDROM and the new one doesn't work,
even though none of your DXbase user options were changed, then you may need to contact
the manufacturer of the new CDROM to find out what changed in their product and if it was
intended to be backward compatible.
- After contacting the manufacturer, please pass any information that they provide to
Scientific Solutions so that we can assess any impacts to DXbase.

| By the way... |
| As a software development company, we are constantly upgrading the software tools that
we use to produce DXbase and other products. We have learned ( the hard way) that it
is critical to always ask the question, "Is this upgrade backward compatible",
before we make our final decision to purchase or use an upgraded tool. In the past,
there have been some issues with the makers of Address CDROMS, but more recently they seem
to be careful about this. Nevertheless, we recommend that before purchasing an
upgraded Address CDROM product, find out what changed and if it is compatible with their
previous .DLL. If they tell you it is compatible, then you should not experience any
difficulty. If it is not backward compatible, then you may wish to investigate
further with the manufacturer to see if it will work.
